Dear Mom,
Our camping trip has been really fun so far! Everything is so lush and beautiful. We went on a boat ride over the lake to explore and came across a bear swimming in the water. We were scared it might come over to us, but everything turned out well. I can't wait to tell you all about it later!
Love,
Emily

Dear Big Factory,
As you can see, we live in a gorgeous place with nice, clear water to play in. I am concerned about the waste from your factory polluting the water. It could get really disgusting, as I have shown with the toxic material in the toilet. Please consider a more environmentally friendly way to dispose of waste.
Sincerely,
Emily Kartheiser

UNIT 2: RELATIONSHIPS REFLECTION
Unit 2 focused on relationships, and I believe the studios really portray that. I really liked doing printmaking because it was fun to explore a different medium. I outlined the state of Kansas where I'm from and painted a heart on Overland Park. I created a "home is where the heart is" stamp. I love this activity because it allows students a lot of creativity in what relationship they choose to highlight, as well as to play around with different techniques that they probably haven't used before. I think that if I were to do this activity, I would spend a day just making stamps and designing what they wanted to create, and then make everything a different day. It is interesting to see all of the designs created and how people express themselves through them. The postcards were so fun to make, because students get to interact with one another. It shows a different side of relationships, focusing on the relationship between objects in a collage rather than personal relationships. Bang (2000) states “I had read a lot and thought a lot about what went on in pictures, but largely things seemed to either ‘work’ or ‘not work’ for unrelated reasons.” (pg. 42). This was definitely shown in the postcards because certain elements seemed to work perfectly together, while other picture additions were harder to incorporate into the overall look of the postcard. It was fun to write a message to someone on the back of what we created. This studio also incorporates relationships between people with our messages to loved ones. Pop-up homes and habitats was my favorite one to do because I loved all the different options available. I chose to create a pocket home with things representing my home inside that are important to me. It is something I could carry around to always have a little piece of home with me. I thought it was really interesting the different interpretations my classmates took and some chose things to show their "home" that weren't houses at all but had to deal with other aspects of their lives and what was important with their relationships.
Every student has relationships that are important to them, and being able to express them through art projects such as these is a great way for them to connect with the subjects and show others things that they value. Studios about personal relationships tell a story to viewers about the artist's life. As Pink (2005) states, "The ability to encapsulate, contextualize, and emotionalize has become vastly more important in the Conceptual Age." He believes stories accomplish all of those traits and are important in providing meaning.
